Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia. With 693,064 inhabitants (January 2014), Riga is the largest city of the Baltic states and home to more than one third of Latvia’s population. The city lies on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava. Riga’s territory covers 307.17 km (118.60 sq mi) and lies between 1 and 10 metres (3.3 and 32.8 ft) above sea level, on a flat and sandy plain.

The climate of Riga is humid continental (Köppen Dfb). The coldest months are January and February, when the average temperature is −5 °C (23 °F) but temperatures as low as −20 to −25 °C (−4 to −13 °F) can be observed almost every year on the coldest days. The proximity of the sea causes frequent autumn rains and fogs. Continuous snow cover may last eighty days. The summers in Riga are warm and humid with the average temperature of 18 °C (64 °F), while the temperature on the hottest days can exceed 30 °C (86 °F).

The Latvian National Opera (LNO, Latvijas Nacionālā opera), Riga, is the national opera of Latvia. The opera company includes the Latvian National Ballet (LNB), LNO Chorus, and LNO Orchestra. Riga already had a German-speaking theatre, which also offered opera and ballet, from 1782, and this was housed in the Riga City Theatre from 1863.

A timelapse I filmed during my holiday in Riga, Latvia between August 14th and September 1st. Showing in my opinion only a small portion of the beautiful city of Riga, for the full experience I highly recommend visiting yourself; you won't be disappointed, as the locals are friendly, the nightlife is brilliant and generally the atmosphere is worth visiting for alone.

Although there are encroachments of modern structures within the old town area, it still retains its old world charm. A very delightful place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. 11 April 2012.
