The Samoas Overview
Samoa is located south of the equator, about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean. The total land area is 2,842 km (1,097 sq mi),consisting of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai’i which account for 99% of the total land area, and eight small islets.
These are the three islets in the Apolima Strait , the four Aleipata Islands off the eastern end of Upolu , and Nu’usafe’e.The main island of Upolu is home to nearly three-quarters of Samoa’s population, and its capital city is Apia.
The Samoan islands have been produced by vulcanism, the source of which is the Samoa hotspot which is probably the result of a mantle plume. While all of the islands have volcanic origins, only Savai’i, the western most island in Samoa, is volcanically active with the most recent eruptions in Mt Matavanu (1905–1911), Mata o le Afi (1902) and Mauga Afi (1725). The highest point in Samoa is Mt Silisili, at 1858 m (6,096 ft). The Saleaula lava fields situated on the central north coast of Savai’i are the result of the Mt Matavanu eruptions which left 50 km² (20 sq mi) of solidified lava.

The white sandy seaside is called Lalomanu Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Samoa with beach fale accommodation run by locals, including Litia Sini Beach Resort and Taufua Beach Fales, for tourists and visitors. The beach has rich coral lagoons and one of the best views in Samoa.
Piula Cave Pool (also known as Fatumea Pool) is a natural freshwater pool by the sea beneath the historic Methodist Chapel at Piula on the north coast of Upolu island in Samoa. It is situated at Lufilufi in the political district of Atua, 26 km east from the capital Apia, along the scenic coastal road.
The eruptions began 4 August 1905 and stopped in November 1911. The lava flowed over 40 square miles (100 km 2) of countryside to the lagoon and reef, destroying villages in its path between Samalae'ulu to the east and Saleaula to the west. The depth of the lava flow in some parts was 400 feet.
The Pulemelei mound (also known as Tia Seu Ancient Mound) is the largest and most ancient structure in Polynesia. It is situated in Letolo Plantation in the Palauli district, at the east end of Savai'i island in Samoa.
