Langkawi, Malaysia Overview
Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border.
Langkawi, a cluster of 104 islands separated from mainland Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca, is a district of the state of Kedah in Northern Malaysia and lies approximately 51 km west of Kedah. The total land mass of the islands is 47,848 hectares. The main island spans about 25 km from north to south and slightly more for east and west. The coastal areas consist of flat, alluvial plains punctuated with limestone ridges. Two-thirds of the island is dominated by forest-covered mountains, hills and natural vegetation.

Langkawi receives more than 2,400 mm (94 in) of rain annually. Langkawi has a true dry season from December until February while March to November is a long raining season. August is the wettest month, when it normally receives more than 500 mm (20 in).

Langkawi Wildlife Park is an excellent destination and "must-visit" attraction when in Langkawi. There are plenty of wildlife and experiential activities are available for visitors.
Telaga Tujuh Known as the "Seven Wells" in English, Telaga Tujuh is located around 45 kilometers from Kuah town at Gunung Mat Cincang. It is easily reachable by taxis or buses form the main town. Nestled at the north western corner of Langkawi Island, the beautifully crafted geological formation is indeed a natural wonder to be admired.
Towering over all other features and formations of the Pulau Langkawi stands the Gunung Raya, majestic and awe-inspiring. Like most other aspects of Langkawi, this 881 meter high elevation is also shrouded in myths and legends. The natives believe that the Gunung Raya is indeed the petrified form of a giant called Mat Raya.
Basically, the Federal Route 112 is the main circular trunk road that circles through the Langkawi Island. Both its starting terminal (Kilometre Zero) and the ending terminal are located at the Kuah town.
Visitors can get to Pulau Payar from the Kuah jetty point by catamaran or speed boat. The catamaran services operated by Langkawi Coral, takes about 45 minutes to get to Pulau Payar while the speed boat takes an hour. It is advisable to book the catamaran service a day before the trip.
LANGKAWI LEGENDS Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands, approximately 51 km northwest of the state of Kedah on Peninsula Malaysia. It is the oldest rock formation to have risen from the seabed some 550 million years ago during the Cambrian period.
